Who cursed the tithe coins?
On the eve of the great flood, the tithe coins in the abbey treasury turned cold overnight. By morning they had tarnished black, and anyone who leaned close to the chest swore they heard a whisper. Four people are suspected, and what they dropped that week has since washed down into the deep.
- The Tithe Clerk: Counted the tithe coins every evening, and was the last to close the chest.
- The Moneychanger: Changed the tithe silver for foreign coin, and had quarrelled over the rate.
- The Dyer: Worked the dye vats across the yard from the treasury, and came and went at odd hours.
- The Weaver: Wove the treasury's coin bags, and had been paid for them in short measure.
